Dual Citizenship

Embassy of The Republic of Ghana

Copenhagen, Denmark

In accordance with the Citizenship Act 2002 (Act 91) of 1st December 2002, Ghana now accepts Dual Citizenship. Since then, the Embassy of Ghana, Copenhagen - Denmark accepts and processes applications from qualified Ghanaians for Dual Citizenship.

It has come to the knowledge of the Embassy that some Ghanaians who have renounced their Ghanaian citizenship, are still in possession of their Ghanaian passports without the knowledge of the Embassy, even though they are not registered as dual citizens, and do not have a dual citizenship card.

1. An applicant must be of Ghanaian Nationality with genuine documents from the named Nordic countries (Swedish or Finnish).

2. Note that Permanent Residence Permit is not Citizenship. Therefore, Ghanaians with Permanent Residence Permit do not qualify for Dual Citizenship.

Ghanaians who have acquired additional nationalities are eligible to apply for dual citizenship.

3. All applications will be forwarded to the Ministry of Interior, Accra - Ghana for the final decision, processing, and issuance of the Dual Citizenship Certificate.

4. On acquiring the Dual Citizenship, holders will be entitled to apply and possess Ghana Passports in addition to their non-Ghanaian Passports. i.e. Swedish or Danish Passports.

Chapter 3 of the 1992 constitution, section 8, sub-section 2, states:

A person who becomes a citizen of Ghana by registration and immediately after the day on which he becomes a citizen of Ghana is also a citizen of some other country, shall cease to be a citizen of Ghana unless he has renounced his citizenship of that other country, taken the oath of allegiance specified in the Second Schedule to this Constitution and made and registered such declaration of his intentions concerning residence as may be prescribed by law, or unless he has obtained an extension of time for taking those steps and the extended period has not expired.

Ghana accepts dual citizenship. For this reason, holding on to a Ghanaian passport is illegal if you are ‘also a citizen of some other country’ unless you have a Dual Citizenship status/ card.

NOTE: It is, however, an offense for a Dual Citizenship holder, to use the two Passports interchangeably to deceive an Immigration Officer. Such offenders are liable to a summary conviction to a fine or a term of imprisonment not exceeding 1 year or both.

In this regard, all holders of Dual Citizenship are required to travel only with their certificate of Dual Citizenship and only one Passport of their choice.

It is envisaged that successful applicants would be able to receive their Certificate within three (3) months. Applicants should exercise patience and restraint for any delays in the processes.
